within the Heavy Metal world, there are multiple genre’s, which comes as quite a surprise to many non-metal fans. Trying to describe these differences can be difficult. Fortunately, one stalwart youtube showoff has made a fantastic overview of many of these differences.

Miss May I

Miss May I is another in the seemingly endless genre that is metalcore. However they work for me, as I think their music-to-mayhem ratio is well honed. Their latest album is Monument, and much of it can be heard on their myspace page. I think it is worth checking out. Currently they are touring with Whitechapel, but unfortunately that tour is not coming to MN. Jump for some videos.

Black Veil Brides

As a 30-something metal fan, I have to believe that I don’t fall into the dEMOgraphic that Black Veil Brides appeal to. That said they do seem to have a something. They really pull some elements from the past and make them new again.

What am I talking about? Lead singer is Andy Sixx, that name can’t be by accident, but he has no other connection to the other musician that shares that same last name moniker. Black Veil Brides has a modern sound, but channel a very WASP-y shout at the devil thing as well. They spend time with the instruments, but like many scrEMO bands, spend too much time on the “feel good” singing for my taste. That said, Black Veil Brides have a tight sound, and are worth having on the radar.

this is the video for Deadlock‘s single: “The Brave/ Agony Applause” off their most recent album Manifesto. The album is in my top 5 for the year so far. This video is absurd, but more importantly, the male singer (Johannes Prem) looks like Christian Bale. Enjoy

Firewind needs a lesson

Dear Firewind, please take a cue from Dragonforce, and realize that your video is ridiculous. Nothing happens in this video. Instead of a random hot chick walking around, perhaps she, oh I don’t know, SETS SOMETHING ON FIRE. Seriously, why aren’t their dragons or warlocks, or something that has anything to do with anything in this video. Also, Gus G is very good on the axe.

Zunepass

So I bought a Zune. Not because I am anti iPod, nor any other music player, but because I was intrigued by zunepass. For those unfamiliar, Zunepass is a music rental service (for lack of better words). The Zune music store works much like any other, but with the Zunepass service you can listen to so much more. There is a monthly service fee (currently $15), and with it you can download most of the Zune catalog (i.e most of what you are looking for). These songs can also be played back on the Zune device. each month you can keep 10 songs from those downloaded, and can outright buy music just like any other service.

What does this have to do with metal? For me everything. I can now listen to whole albums instead of just the youtube clip of the one single, I can meander through back catalogs of bands, and if I don’t like something I am not out $10+ per album.

An example, I saw Amon Amarth by accident once (they opened a Children of Bodom show), and really liked their stage presence, but found most of the singles kinda flat. Recently just pulled the full album “Twilight of the Thunder God” which has the song “Guardians of Asgaard” which was put out as a single, previously the only song I had heard off the album, and found it middling. Turns out it is not the best representation of the music on the album, and I find much of the rest rather enjoyable.

This is not to say that you should go get a zune device, but there is a free 14 day trial for Zunpass (sigh, windows only). perhaps worth a look. It is currently consuming most of my time.
